Are you receiving calls from my phone number?

It has recently come to my attention that my cell phone number, which is also my business phone, is being used for Caller ID Phone Spoofing. What does this mean? It means that someone trying to hide their identity is illegally transmitting my phone number to the caller ID of the person they are calling.

You can read more about this on the Federal Communications Commission website. I have submitted a complaint with the FCC regarding this issue.

THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING! For me, and I know for you as well. If you’ve come to my website trying to figure out who keeps calling you, please be assured, it is not me. Please DO NOT offer any important personal information if you do answer the call.

I have contacted my phone carrier and apparently, aside from changing my phone number, there is nothing that can be done to prevent this from happening. Even if I did change my number, there’s no guarantee it wouldn’t happen again. And since this has been my phone number for almost 20 years and my business number for 13 years, changing my number does not feel like a viable option.

What You Get From a Treatment at Be Well Therapeutics

For most people, money is the biggest obstacle to receiving regular massage and other forms of bodywork. There, I said it. We don’t like to talk about money, it’s supposed to be a private issue. But I’m addressing it head on. Regular bodywork is a considerable budget item, and it’s important to acknowledge that.

I know this because

  • I walk the walk and get regular massage and craniosacral therapy.
  • I am crazy tight with finances, so if I don’t plan for it, these treatments don’t happen.

But if I expect you to budget for massage, craniosacral therapy, or Reiki every week, month, or quarter, it’s my job to tell you what you’re buying. So here it is, what you get from a treatment with me.

Clarity in Pricing

What I charge is clearly listed here.

I tend to feel uncomfortable with tipping. It can be confusing to know what businesses you’re suppose to tip and how much. So I don’t take tips. I want you to feel comfortable knowing you pay the listed price and that’s it.

A Full Hour

1 hour = 60 minutes. The same holds true for my 75, 90, and 120 minute treatments. The clock doesn’t start until I walk in the room and actually begin the treatment.

That’s not the case for every business. Massage Envy’s hour is 50 minutes. Elements gives you 55 minutes. Even some full service spas operate on a 50-minute hour. But in my office, the treatments last exactly as long as indicated. (Unless you’re late, then I may have to adjust accordingly.)

Ease of Scheduling

Scheduling tends to be the second biggest obstacle to receiving regular bodywork. We never think of scheduling at a time that is actually convenient to call.

You can schedule with me online right here. If you don’t see a time that works for you, feel free to send me an email with some times you’re looking for, and I’ll try to make it work. If I can’t, I’ll suggest someone else in my office whose schedule may be more suited to you.

If you prefer, you can call me at (508) 612-7890 to schedule. Please understand that we may need to play a bit of phone tag since I may need to call you back between clients.

Attention

You get my full attention. For the time period you scheduled, you are the superstar. You are the reason we’re in the room. Need silence? We can do that.

Want me to spend most of the time on your on your feet, or your neck, or your back? Sure. Warm pillow? Cool pillow? Not a problem.

You get your own full attention. No phone. No demands. Just you.

Experience

I’ve had 11 years of practice and hundreds of hours of continuing education. They were all just prep for your treatment. I am committed to furthering my skills and knowledge and offering you the best experience I can.

My skill set goes beyond just massage. I also incorporate craniosacral therapy and energy work. I am a Reiki Master Teacher, and have been practicing Reiki for 13 years. I’ve received basic and advanced training in Craniosacral Therapy, and have been practicing CST for 6 years. A combination of all of these modalities allows me to ease muscular tension and pain, as well as improve the functioning of your central nervous system and balance the flow of energy in your body.

Clinical Prudence

I won’t practice any techniques that are unsafe for you and your health condition. If you have a condition where massage is unsafe, we may be able to still use Craniosacral Therapy and/or Reiki to assist your healing process.

If necessary, and with your permission, I am willing to talk with your doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, and other health care providers so that we can work together to provide you with the best care possible.

Proper Licensing and Insurance

There are plenty of massage therapists offering discounted massage, operating under the radar.  They may not have a practitioner license or an establishment license. You can check all that here.

I have a practitioner’s license and an establishment license in the state of Massachusetts. As a member of ABMP (Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals), I am also in compliance with the insurance I am required to carry as part of my licensing.

Referrals

A treatment with me gets you connections with all the practitioners I know. And that’s a lot of people. If massage, craniosacral therapy, or Reiki isn’t helping your tendonitis/backache/anxiety, I’ll help you find the right acupuncturist, PT or counselor for you.

High Quality Massage Oil (or Cream, or Lotion).

I only use the best products on your skin. You won’t leave my office feeling drenched with oil. It’s also highly unlikely that you’ll have a reaction to a cheap fragrance or preservative. I deal with my own skin sensitivities and respiratory allergies. This makes me very picky about the products I use, since I need to be in contact with them at least 20 hours a week. I only use products on your skin that I feel safe using on mine. And if for some reason you do have an adverse affect to a product I use, please let me know and I’ll be sure to find a product right for you.

I mostly use several different products from PurePro, located in Western Massachusetts. Take a look at their values and you’ll understand why I love doing business with them. For most of the massage work I do, I use the unscented Ultra Massage Oil. If I decide to use any scented product, like the Arnica Relief lotion for aching muscles, or the Herbal Unwind oil for deeper relaxation, I always check in the first time to make sure you are comfortable with the scent.

You get to support a small local business

It’s just me! No conglomerate. No fancy management structure or corporate set up. Just a little business owner, paying her taxes, making a living, and participating in the same communities she serves. There are fewer and fewer businesses that can stay afloat in an era of big box stores and amazon. When you pay to receive a treatment from me, you can be certain that money is staying in the local economy.

Celebrating 10 Years!

This October, I celebrate 10 years of being a Massage Therapist. It kind of blows my mind! I still remember the first day of hands-on training in massage school. We were learning how to massage the arm. I was so nervous to be touching people that I actually developed a rash down the inside of my forearms. I wasn’t able to take part that day because no one could be sure what had caused the rash or if it could be contagious. I was pretty certain it was just my nerves, but I was also relieved that I could sit this one out and just watch.

In October of 2005 (a year and a half and about 800 hours later), I completed the program. I knew this was my path with heart. I wasn’t sure where it would lead me, but I felt excited to continue my journey.

And now I’m here. Working in an office with awesome colleagues and with amazing clients like you. I don’t think I could have ever envisioned this 10 years ago. Even when I feel tired at the end of the week, I am so thankful it’s from doing work that I love.

Introducing the Be Well Therapeutics Signature Blend

I recently decided to add a “new” treatment to my list of services. It may not actually be new for many of you, but I love this treatment so much that I felt it needed it’s own introduction.

When I decided to name my business, I wanted that name to embody what makes me passionate about the work that I do. It is truly my passion to assist others on their journey of creating wellness in their life. I believe that Massage Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, and Reiki are all important aspects of personal wellness care that help to support physical and emotional healing. I’m not just saying this because it’s my job. It’s also my personal experience. As part of my own self-care, I receive a combination of these treatments at least twice a month. And boy, do I value that time for myself!

It struck me one day, how blending these treatments could create a powerfully wholistic experience. The Be Well Therapeutics Signature Blend treats the whole person. Massage Therapy treats the physical body, including any chronic pain and tension held in the muscles. Craniosacral Therapy helps to improve the functioning of the central nervous system (comprised of the brain and spinal cord) and release restrictions that are being held deeper in the body. And Reiki helps to balance the flow of energy through the body. You have the choice of combining all three of these treatments, or doing a combination of massage with just Craniosacral Therapy or Reiki.

Rock and Roll Parties

When I was about 10 years old, my Dad threw this great ‘rock & roll’ party for some family and friends. Unfortunately, no one knew what they were really in for. Once everyone arrived, Dad put them to work—a literal rock and roll party—pick rocks from the garden and roll them to where he wanted to build a stone wall! That’s my Dad, always so clever.

I think these years of gardening in New England soil as I’ve grown up is how I developed such an affinity for working with stones. I collected them as a kid, and I still do. My Dad teased me a bit when I moved into my new home recently because I had a couple of boxes just labelled ‘rocks’. And I know this is the reason I enjoyed learning LaStone Therapy. I love getting to play with rocks as a way to help people feel better!

To me, a LaStone Therapy stone massage is like going to the beach in the summer. If you’re a true New Englander, you know how wonderful it is to lay out on the beach, soaking in the warmth of the sun until your heart pounds in your ears and your body begins to overheat. IMG_2490Valentine’s Day is upon us.  Sometimes it seems like another one of those “Hallmark Holidays”, something to fill the retail shelves in the space between Christmas and Easter. But just as Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to express all that we’re grateful for, the beauty of Valentine’s Day is that it offers us the opportunity to express our love to others. To tell those we hold near and dear to our hearts, those we appreciate and value, those we love, just how much they mean to us. Hopefully, we’re already doing this all year long, but it never hurts to have a special day to honor the occasion!

How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? If chocolates and cards seem a little boring or cliche, think about approaching the day (or the whole month!) with a focus on connecting with the people you care about.

Share some time with someone. Your significant other, your mom or dad, your kids, a best friend, a new friend. Create an experience together. Create a memory. It will live in your hearts much longer than a gift.

Appreciate someone and let them know why. Maybe it’s someone very close to you, and maybe not. Maybe it’s your child’s teacher or coach, or a co-worker, or the clerk at that store who took the time to help you find exactly what you were looking for. Tell them.

And for a really different experience this year…

Connect with YOU. The best gift you can give the people you love is a happy, healthy you. Maybe it’s time to practice a little self-care. Take time to schedule your favorite bodywork treatment, or a candle-lit bubble bath, or a walk in the woods, or whatever it is that you love to do that makes you feel good about yourself inside. Here are some other great suggestions for taking care of yourself.

Self-love is not being selfish or self-centered. When we take time to value and appreciate ourselves, to take care of ourselves, we increase our energy and ability to love and care for others. So spend some time with you, and appreciate yourself and all that you bring into the world just by being you.

21 Days of Gratitude

I heard someone mention recently that it takes 21 days to build a habit. This idea has stuck with me as I’ve been incorporating some healthy activities into my life more consistently over the past few months. Mainly things like meditation and exercise, which I tend to go through off and on phases with. The thought is that if I can do it for 21 days consistently, I’ll turn it into a habit that becomes part of my life.

Psychological studies show that happiness stems not from being the best, most successful, or most attractive, but from gratitude. I started a gratitude journal a few months ago. In my quiet time each morning, I write down 10 things I am grateful for. Actually 11, because I always write one more that is something I’m specifically grateful for about myself. My goal was to do this for 21 days. 

Starting a gratitude journal has a deeper purpose than just reminding yourself all you have to be thankful for in life. It’s about shifting your focus or your energy. It’s retraining your brain to look for the things that are working in your life. All too often we have this tendency or habit of focusing in on the negative, looking at what’s wrong, worrying about the ‘what-ifs’, and stressing about the ‘should-haves’. The gratitude journal is a simple tool to help us create a new habit. 

It has shifted my energy. Not just when I’m writing in it, but throughout most of my day as well. It’s a subtle, inner shift. I just feel lighter and calmer and more satisfied inside. I didn’t stop after 21 days. I like focusing my attention on what’s working. It helps me find the opportunities, even in the challenges I may face.

The reality is, there are always going to be challenges we have to face and situations we don’t feel happy about. We are always going to have negative and positive thoughts about things. That’s normal.  We do, however, have a choice about which thoughts we’re going to feed. Are you going to continue feeding the thoughts that bring you down and stress you out? Or, as those thoughts come in, can you just as quickly let them go and feed the thoughts that lift you up, bring you peace, and help you see the opportunities and solutions already present?

This November, I hope you’ll really think about gratitude. Not just on Thanksgiving Day, but how you can experience and express it everyday!

Breathe

One of the most accessible tools we have to help us maintain, or bring us back to, those feelings of relaxation, peace, and wellness experienced post-massage (or post-craniosacral or Reiki treatment) is to be mindful of our breath. I’ve talked about this before, along with some resources, here.

Our breath is with us no matter where we are or what we’re doing. It’s so much a part of us, that we tend to take it for granted. Most of us do not maximize the healing potential of our breath.

So how do we do that? Sure, there are meditation practices and breathing exercises we can do, but those usually involve setting aside a certain amount of time in our day to practice. And while I certainly believe dedicated practice is an important aspect to learning to breathe more fully, I think we can start out even simpler than that.

In fact, we can start right now.

Stop.

Right now, in this very moment, take a breath in. Inhale deeply, feeling your belly expand and your chest fill. Exhale FULLY. This part is very important! Gently contract your diaphragm (or your stomach muscles) to push ALL of the air out of your lungs. You’ll be surprised how much more air there is to be released beyond what you’re used to exhaling! Now relax your stomach muscles and feel your body naturally fill with a nice deep inhale, like a vacuum sucking in the air.

How do you feel? I just timed myself doing that and it took just under 20 seconds.  20 seconds. In one minute, you could take 3 of those breaths. Personally, I feel more centered, more aware, more focused. My brain feels clearer, my body feels calmer. And that was from just one breath!

We have so many reminders in our day to be mindful of our breath. Use your breath to help you respond (rather than react) to negative or challenging situations. Use it to be more present in the moment, so you can more fully enjoy the positive and fulfilling experiences in your life. You don’t have to keep your attention there forever. Just take one breath. Maybe even 2 or 3. And then respond or enjoy as appropriate.

So try it out…

When you feel tired, breathe.
When you feel eye fatigue from staring at a computer screen, close your eyes and breathe.
When you feel nervous, or anxious, breathe.
When you feel irritated with someone, before you react or snap back with words or actions you may regret, breathe.
When your attention is drawn to the beauty of a landscape, breathe.
When you’re with people you love, breathe.
When you’re taking part in a hobby or something else you enjoy, breathe.
When someone tells you they love you, breathe.

Breathe.  Let your life be a meditation.

On Being Well

I started out on this path of becoming a massage therapist 10 years ago because I wanted to assist people on their journey to create wellness in their life. Being well means something different for everyone. My passion lies in helping you discover this within yourself. So what does it mean for you, in your life, to Be Well?

Receiving Massage Therapy, Reiki, and Craniosacral Therapy (CST) are all important aspects of personal wellness care. Each of these therapies holds many different benefits to help support your physical and emotional healing. But it’s not the goal of this post to explore that.

Even these therapies are most effective when used in conjunction with making healthy choices for ourselves in our day to day living. That’s where true, balanced, wellness is found.

So what does that look like for you? What activities do you enjoy that help you feel good inside, or relaxed, or energized? What choices are you making that you’re aware are draining your energy? What would you like to be doing differently?

I truly believe wellness is a wholistic experience. And yes, I know most would say I’m spelling that wrong. But I want you to think ‘whole’. I want you to think about the wholeness of who you are as a person and what works for YOU to feel well physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. You get to define and create this!

My intention over the next few blog posts is to explore some of the things you can incorporate into your life to help you maintain those feelings of relaxation, peace, and wellness, that you feel after receiving a treatment. Some ‘tools to add to your toolbox’. If you connect with some of the suggestions, great. If not, that’s okay too. My desire is simply to get you thinking about your own possibilities. And if you have specific things you do, I’d love to hear from you!

The single most effective relaxation technique I know…

…is conscious regulation of breath. –Dr. Andrew Weil

Our breath is one of the processes in our body we so easily take for granted. Like the beating of our heart, our breathing will continue without any conscious effort on our part. The amazing thing is that we can consciously and intentionally influence and control the flow of our breath, allowing for a bridge between our conscious and unconscious mind.

It’s easy to notice how our physical and emotional states can have a great impact on the state of our breathing. When we’re in pain or experiencing strong emotions our breathing may speed up or we may find ourselves constricting or holding our breath. But it also works the other way. Conscious breathing can bring about changes in our physical and emotional states. Dr. Weil says that“practicing regular, mindful breathing can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders.”

There are many breathing practices we can use to help us transform our breath and the state of our physical and emotional health. Awareness is the first step – simply pay attention to your breathing.  Another simple exercise is to consciously attend to your exhalation. By completely exhaling the air in your lungs, you naturally create room to more fully receive air into them. This allows for a healthier delivery of oxygen to the body and removal of carbon dioxide from the body.
